Frequently Asked Questions
What is Adult Karate?
Karate is a Japanese martial art where a typical beginners class will include warm up exercises, kicking and boxing to pads, the techniques are then put in a simple form and practiced to each other. Training is fairly vigorous but it is assumed that beginners are unhealthy to start with and the fitness will come with training. After around 6 weeks students move on to strikes with elbows and knees and basic joint locking, as time goes by instruction will include a full range of strikes, kicks, locks, throws, chokes, strangles, dislocations, pressure points, groundwork, breathing and posture exercises, mental awareness, concentration, self defence and meditation. The student wears a white karate suit and is graded with a different colour belt as they progress through the syllabus up to black belt (average time 3 - 5 years) where they then progress in 'dan' grades.
What is Children's Karate?
Children's karate will include warm up exercises and skill games appropriate for their age group, kicking and boxing to pads with simple forms to help them remember their techniques. The skills learned will be broad based and suitable for their lifestyle. They will learn how to be healthy, with the right balance of training, nutrition and rest, the training is designed to boost their self esteem, confidence and how to deal with bullying and attack situations that they are likely to encounter and how to train their behavior to get on well with others in life. The classes are usually broken down into age and graded groups.
What is Tai Chi?
Tai Chi begins with gentle qigong exercises, focusing on mental awareness and concentration, they 'ease' the body into a state of well being and increase natural vigour, this is usually followed by training in the traditional form that has been carefully handed down through five generations of the Yang Family to us today consisting of a perfect 20 minute graceful training routine that works deep within the body strengthening core muscles, tendons and bone density. This is usually followed by partner exercises and push hands drills. Eventually you can learn the more martial forms including double edge sword, broadsword, spear and pole. Tai Chi is ideal for all ages and specifically for older people looking for that more gentle way of treating the body.
What should I bring with me for my free trial lesson?
Wear loose clothing that you can move around in and remember that you will probably be training in bare feet. Turn up around 15 minutes early to fill out a form, giving us your basic details and be introduced into the class. In case you want to sign up on the night after your lesson, bring your bank address details including your account and sort numbers (you will usually find these in your cheque book) and your first month's payment by cash or cheque.
