Dojo closures for the Summer Course and essential repair - 13th - 20th July and  24th - 31st August.

This is Spike... the English Mastiff puppy, the new addition to the Honbu Dojo doggy staff, joining Buster the rescue mongrel and Wee Jock the Border Terrier.  At 10 weeks old Spike weighs in over 3 stone and is expected to grow to a massive 14 stone or so!

This should keep Steve and Ann fit walking all 3 dogs on a daily basis and we think that 'Wee Jock' at 20lbs will remain as boss!

WUKO EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Eight members of Shi Kon took part in the European Championships in Liege Belgium and managed to come home with 1 silver and 3 bronze medals.

Coach Ian Cuthbert said that the standard was superb and his young squad had performed very well through out.

The men's team had two injuries in the first match and lost two key fighters for the rest of the weekend, but youngsters Jason Marquis and Dan Thackray stepped into the breach and alongside Jenna Shilston, took a bronze in the mixed team event.

Jenna Shilston, Ami Carrigan –Smith and Kerry McCormack won a bronze medal in the ladies team, narrowly losing to Italy in the semi final.

Jenna was unlucky in the individuals, losing to the Italian girl with a dubious contact penalty but Kerry fought brilliantly to take a bronze in the individual Under 60K section.

Rob Ward also fought in the Veterans B section  and was unfortunate to lose to the Russian in a close final.

The World Junior (under 21 s) is later in the  year in Italy and Shi Kon look forward to taking a larger squad there.

Congratulations to Shi Kon and MASA Chairman Steve Rowe on being awarded his 8th Dan by the Shi Kon Committee and homologated and certificated by the World Union of Karate Organisations.

Shi Kon welcomes the introduction of the Independent Safeguarding Authority which means that that all Martial Arts Instructors working with children and vulnerable adults will have to register through the Criminal Record Bureau from October 2009.  Shi Kon Marial Arts and MASA members will be registered by us along with their CRB disclosure.  The ISA press release can be read by clicking here....

Politics reared its ugly head in 2007/8 with the collapse and subsequent bankruptcy of Karate England 2005, since then everything has fallen into disarray. Thank god we helped form and joined the Martial Arts Standards Agency that has been the only stable group since, caring about all the standards that we hold sacred in the Martial Arts. The two opposing groups that have been formed since are the English Karate Federation who hold the WKF mandate who we refuse to join because of their rule that any licence holder cannot train or compete with anyone who does not hold one of their licences! The other group is the NNGBEK (New National Governing Body for English Karate) now called 'Karate England' again, which has many of the same directors that the bankrupted Karate England had. So we remain on the fence. Meanwhile we have joined the World Karate Confederation and the World Union of Karate Organisations whose tournaments are much bigger and in our opinion better run than the WKF and they don’t have the undemocratic rules that the WKF have.

Tournaments - The Shi Kon Team have a full British and International tournament agenda this year, for details call Ian Cuthbert on 07802 481187 or email him here....

The internet is a great resource for us martial artists and none better than your own association website check out this the news page regularly and our lively informative forum by clicking here... Also look in on the catalogue page for some Shi Kon goodies including the latest DVD’s from Steve Rowe (Close Quarter Combat and Beginners Tai Chi) and Dennis Jones (Street Defence). www.woma.tv is an excellent resource for good martial arts information including many filmed lessons and interviews from members Steve Rowe, Dennis Jones and Chris Rowen.

Instructor Registration Programme - Most of you have now registered with our Instructor Registration Programme and have the necessary Professional Indemnity, annual CRB disclosure, and coaching certificates in place, well done!

Steve Rowe given award
Making his usual December visit to the Czech Republic to teach the Police and the Shi Kon members, Steve Rowe was invited to the Martial Arts 'Hall of Fame' awards night live on prime time television at the Congress Centre in Prague to receive an award for his services to the Martial Arts in the Czech Republic over the last 16 years.  Steve has taught the Police and the Shi Kon group there for all that time visiting a minimum of 3 times a year and introduced many top martial arts practitioners to the public in Karate, Tai Chi, Iaido, Jodo and Aikido.

Asked to comment Steve said, "it's nice to receive an award, but the real reward to me is to watch the generations grow up and develop into good, strong, healthy, responsible citizens.  It's like I have a second martial arts family here, headed by my good friend Ondra Musil and his family extending right across the Republic.  Our Summer Courses here have developed into some of the best in the world, in one of the most beautiful places to be found anywhere in the world - it's always a pleasure to visit."
